The AKS-47 is the underfolding-stock variant of the AK-47 – the Soviet assault rifle officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces in 1949 and subsequently fielded across the majority of Warsaw Pact member states. The underfolding metal shoulder stock, designated “S” (Складной, “folding”), reduces overall length from 878mm extended to 645mm folded, with the 415mm barrel, 715 m/s muzzle velocity, and 600 rounds-per-minute cyclic rate unchanged relative to the fixed-stock configuration. Compatible ammunition is the 7.62×39mm cartridge, the eastern-origin intermediate standard common to the AKS-47, AK-47, and AKM across former Warsaw Pact inventories.
