The AKS-47 is the underfolding-stock variant of the AK-47, distinguished by a rear-trunnion swiveling mechanism that lets the metal shoulder stock fold forward and down, reducing overall length from 878mm (stock extended) to 645mm (stock folded). Weight without magazine is 3.470kg, approximately 160g lighter than the fixed-stock AK-47. This configuration was developed for personnel operating within the interior of armored vehicles – BMP infantry fighting vehicles and BTR armored personnel carriers – and for airborne and parachutist units where compact carry dimensions are required for transport and airdrop operations. The rifle chambers 7.62×39mm cartridges and shares all fire control, maintenance, and spare parts requirements with the standard AK-47. Additional 7.62×39mm assault rifle configurations are listed in the assault rifles section of the Atlas supply catalogue.
