This 7.62×39mm assault rifle is a select-fire platform of the AK series in the AKM configuration – a stamped-receiver modernization of the earlier milled AK-47 adopted by the Soviet Army in 1959. The AKM’s pressed-steel receiver reduced unloaded weight to approximately 3.1kg while retaining the same gas-operated rotating bolt mechanism and 7.62×39mm chambering used across AKM, AKMS, and RPK platforms in Warsaw Pact inventories.
Standard ammunition is the 7.62×39mm cartridge, the eastern-origin intermediate round in continuous service since 1949 and common to the AKM, AKMS, and RPK across eastern-origin institutional supply programs. Compatible types include ball, tracer, and API variants, each available as a separately procurable item. The 30-round magazine accepts the full range of AKM-pattern box magazines.
